A Brief History of Sex Toy Use
Sex toys for some would appear to be a fairly new form of entertainment in the bedroom, but they have in fact been around in one form or another for centuries! Dildos used by early civilisations have been found in archeological digs in various parts of the world, made from things such as bone, wood or stone. But it was probably the ancient Greeks who first started to make widespread use of the dildo, with scenes of sex toy use depicted in scenes on surviving works of art and pottery etc.
Like the civilisations which invented them, they seemed to die out, but the sex toy was reinvented by of all people, those prudish Victorians! Ladies of that era who were suffering from various 'ailments' (sexual frustration) would go to their doctors who would use a massage therapy known to us today as masturbation. To ease the burden of treating all these 'hysterical' ladies, some bright spark invented the vibrator.
Initially only available at the surgery, the vibrator evolved into a smaller 'non-doctor' version which could be used at home. It was only when these vibrators began to appear in early porn films that people realised what these devices were really about. They could no longer be used openly and all of a sudden the vibrator was no longer seen as a medical device, and the sex toy was born!
It was probably the era of the swinging 60's which saw the popularity of sex toys hit the more mainstream market, but still this was largely an under the counter commodity, or something to be bought by mail order.
Without doubt, in more recent times the birth of the internet created a huge boom in the sale and availability of sex toys. Due to the ease with which they can now be bought without embarrassment, and the ever increasing range of items available, sex toys can now be found in many people's bedrooms and have lost much of their once sleazy reputation.
